  • Gargoyles Sunglasses: DO NOT BUY
By drink | Wed January 20, 2010

When preparing to go to Panama, I realized I was badly in need of sunglasses which would fit my head. I'm a big guy with a big noggin, and in the past that has meant one of two things; Gargoyles with adjusted frames, or the Oakley Mambo, later renamed M-frame. Unfortunately, Oakley has discontinued the M-frame, so I decided to buy some Gargoyles oversized ANSI classics. This turned out to be a very wrong decision.

You may have seen the counter displays for Gargoyles sunglasses with the dented lens; they have a small, whitened dent in them where the lens has been shot with a .38 caliber handgun. They are, in essence, basically the world's best safety glasses. Correction: They were the best. Today, they are garbage that you should not buy.

What eighty-five dollars for sunglasses got me was an inferior product to the old sixty-five dollar version. The old glasses had all-metal arms with plastic covers; the new glasses apparently have all-plastic arms. The old hinge was a big, chunky thing; the new hinge is tiny and fragile, and it broke while the glasses were in the case and inside of my pack. Now, these glasses are intended to provide maximum eye protection, and they are often sold for hunting use, sometimes with shields on the sides. But as the price has gone up, the quality has dropped sharply.

When the glasses broke, I connected to the Gargoyles website and sent them a nice message asking for help. Here's the (excerpted) email response that I received:

Dear Martin,

Thank you for contacting us. A Gargoyles representative will contact you shortly.

Comments/Enquiries
My brand new oversized ANSI classics died after two days of VERY CAREFUL use. I see that you have dramatically reduced the amount of material in the hinges of the arms since the good old days when the entire arm was a piece of metal. I can see no reason to do this other than to cause them to break easily. I am now two days into a six-week trip to panama with no sunglasses, hazel eyes, and a very large head. Can you do anything for me?

Okay, so maybe it wasn't all sweetness and light, but I found this to be a quite restrained response to the premature breakage of some expensive shades. Unfortunately, by Jan 17 at 2:14 PM they had not got back to me (It did say "shortly" and I AM wandering around without sunglasses) and I sent in:

You must have a different definition of "shortly" than I or the dictionary does.

Here's where the story becomes truly pathetic:

Subject: FW: Thank you for Contacting Gargoyles Eyewear

Hello Mr. Espinoza,
Thank you for contacting our company and selecting the Gargoyles brand of eyewear. We have checked our records and could not find any incoming e-mail from you. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with our product. All Gargoyles protection eyewear carry a lifetime warranty. You can return the glasses to the address below along with the required $12.50 processing fee made payable to Quantum Optics and a replacement will be sent. Our warranty and shipping information appears on the same page as the contact sheet that you filled out. Should you have any further questions you can contact our warranty department at 800-388-0258 Ext. 2157.

That's right, not only did they not get my problem report but they then went on to quote me the warranty policy. Incompetence and indifference. My response follows, and sums up why you should not buy Gargoyles sunglasses:

Am I really going to save money by sending in my glasses and paying for shipping as opposed to just buying a new arm? I believe I shall send these glasses back and get my money back, as is my right as a Californian citizen. I will also need to step up my campaign of sharing just how far your company has fallen. If I had known what pieces of junk you turned these glasses into, I would never have bought them. Bulletproof lenses with hinges that belong on $10 glasses? You should be ashamed for asking me to spend my money. As well, this will provide me no assistance on my trip to Panama; I have over a month to spend here and they don't seem to have sunglasses in my size in this country.

If this is truly your response, your company deserves to fail, and soon.

Do yourself a favor: Do not buy Gargoyles sunglasses at any price. It is clearly long past time for them to fail. You can expect the same "service" if you purchase any of their brands: Gargoyles, Anarchy Eyewear, Angel Eyewear, or Body Glove sunglasses. If you do not want to be taken advantage of, you will not purchase any of these brands.

Definite drop in Quality

I bought my first Gargoyles back in when the Terminator came out & used to be made in USA I believe. These glasses were expensive for that time but very high quality. I recently purchased another on Amazon & price was very cheap but the quality is way down... also made in China now. Don't get me wrong I'm not bashing China they will be making Japanese quality products in 10 years but Gargoyle should have stayed high end. Companies think consumers don't notice slight differences in quality but we do. I only paid around $75.00 for these back in the 80's these were selling for $125.00 but much higher quality.

where can I find an original pair?

I've noticed too that they're now made in China. But where can I find the originals made in the USA? I'd pay over a hundred for one! Do you guys have any tips? I can't even find one on ebay!

All I can say is "good luck"

If you're set on it though, my best advice is to create an eBay search that notifies you if someone posts something like "original gargoyles" or perhaps "gargoyles made in usa". Those old glasses scratched pretty easily and THEIR hinges weren't exactly indestructible either. You might also just look at various shooter's glasses to find something similar, some of them are built very well and many of them are offered in a grey tint as well as the usual amber and clear.

Original Gargoyles sunglasses

I have a ten-year old (original?) pair of Gargoyles sunglasses. The frame is great, but the glass lenses both shattered (but never fell out of the frame) when I recently dropped them. There is a stamp on the inside of the right temple: 'Moto by Gargoyles USA CE'. The left side has: 'US Pat. Pend. Frame Japan'. Any interest?

Original Gargoyles

Keep looking! It took me about a month of searching but I found a pair of original 1980s Gargoyles on ebay. They were actually unopened and in their original packaging. I paid $100.00 for them and it was well worth it, the quality is fantastic. I searched "vintage terminator sunglasses" to find them.

I switched to Oakleys

They have also been bought out by scum (Luxotica) but I got some M2 XLs on eBay when a dog ate an arm off mine that I got as a gift. I called them looking for parts, and they don't have any, but they offered me 10% off another pair. I offered to never give them another dime in return.

Gargoyles quality

I have to agree with you on the quality thing. The quality just isn't the same anymore. I've been collecting Gargoyles for about 15 years. The problems started when Foster Grant bought the Gargoyles name and products. They were originally a US made product, one of the big reasons I bought them. That and the fact that the Terminator wore them. Once production was moved from Kent WA, to China, the quality of the hinges, arms, and even the nose bridges are not what they used to be. Easiest way to tell the old US made ones to the new ones is the logo. The original Gargoyles had a round logo as the new style is more of a squished football shape. Also, the US ones said made in USA on the inside of the right arm. The new ones just have a US patent number, and a sticker on the arm when new stating made in China. Old ones can still be had on eBay and places like that, where most of mine come from now. Have an extensive collection of around 40 or so pairs of original US made ones. Happy hunting.

Classics

You obviously purchased knock offs, badmouthing these glasses as a whole is a little ignorant. I found some original lenses on ebay recently, still had some sides and nose pieces. Was glad to have them back on my head.

My buddy got a pair when he got married almost 20 years ago and was still using them daily, though they were scratched to hell so I passed a pair of the demo lenses to him and he was quite happy. Just be careful who you buy from, if I had received a pair with plastic arms I'd have returned them before I put them on.

You're an idiot, but I approved your comment anyway

I included the complaint above, along with the response, I bought these from a reputable store etc etc. As the other comments make clear, they've degraded the quality substantially and unless you get NOS or somehow-pristine used you're going to get garbage.

Gargoyles' loss of quality

I bought my first pair back in 1984 when I became a cop and bought several pair, including chrome and gold standard. Made the mistake of ordering 2 new pair for motorcycle riding recently and was astounded at the junk I received. Made in China as opposed to USA and the optical quality was disappointing. Kept them so I could save my 6 pair of USA models. When (not if) they break, I will replace with some other brand of similar quality to the originals. Customer service should get better as the quality gets lower. Don't buy Gargoyles brand. You have been warned.

Gargoyles suck

When I met my husband he was wearing Gargoyle 85's he looked so handsome in that style! They were the originals from the late 80's and were very well made.He had 2 pair and they lasted until the mid 90's.For his birthday I bought him Gargoyles and they looked great but they lasted over a year then I had to buy another pair for him.Every year I am buying him a new pair and they are made like dimestore glasses and not the quality of the original pair he had when we got together ! I just found your site when searching for Gargoyles for him again! Thanks for the info and I now will be looking at other quality name brands instead. Thanks for your help:)

Made in China Gargoyles

Thanks for the warning all. I have had a few pairs of Gargoyle glasses. It has been over a decade since I purchased a new pair. I was about to make a new purchase when I stumbled on the forum. Like redwing boots and so many other "American" made products, the company has sent their manufacturing to China's slave labor factories so the company heads can get fatter year end bonuses. As with redwing boots, it sounds like Gargoyles have also lost their U.S.A. quality that gave them a name in the first place. These department d*ck heads forget that American workers are part of the quality, company success matrix. Greedy idiots that they are.

Thanks for the heads up

Was looking to buy a pair of these and stumbled across this. Good to know as I would have bought online and wouldn't have a chance to try them on and see the quality in person. I'll have to find something else I like:(
