Because I have a lot of these, I didn't want to lump them in with my main blog on this game. But because there are a lot of them, I thought that it was worth posting my list.
Things that are still bad and/or stupid about No Man's Sky
Some of this could be fixed relatively easily, some not so much (technical or balancing issues)
I am removing things from this list if I discover they are false or outdated, help me out.
There be spoilers here.
- No down/crouch
- Long jumps are hard to make happen when you want them and happen all the time when you don't
- Only one mission can be active at a time
- No sort inventory button
- Exploring planets is great until you've seen the various kinds of planets, then it's a bit samey.
- Every planet has basically the same minerals with different shapes, except for the ones which actually are identical.
- Terrain generator makes a good variety of shapes but it's shallow.
This improved in the Worlds II update, but it's still true. - The shape of the bedrock in particular makes little to no sense.
- Some items which are supposed to be buried are often floating in midair.
- Plants and crates are sometimes in midair.
- Plants and minerals are often multiply and identically stacked in the same spot.
- Mission goals are sometimes beneath the bedrock so missions cannot be completed.
- Accepting a new mission sets the current mission to the new mission, except when it doesn't
- Mission selection UI is trash, so going back and changing back to the mission you had selected every time you accept a new one is irritating
- Plant and mineral hitboxes are mostly pretty bad, you will shoot them when you're not hitting them.
- Animal hitboxes are also bad, especially around the legs, you will miss them when you are hitting them there in particular.
- Derelict freighter hit boxes are garbage. It's hard to shoot through doorways for example.
- Most NPC dialogue makes little to no sense even when you can understand it and is not assigned intelligently
- Boltcaster is irritating in general due to its inconsistent behavior
- Boltcaster ricochets sometimes persist for several seconds instead of fading timely
- Boltcaster sometimes refuses to reload until you move from where you are standing
- Multi-tool upgrade limits are restrictive even after fully upgrading
- Repair missions sometimes don't complete successfully even when you have achieved the goals
- In flight S key ("slow down") is also "chase nearby enemy" which can cause lots of irritation.
You can change this to the E key toggling chase enemy, but that is also the key you press to land. Guess how that goes. - Speaking of the E key, it's both "interact with item" and "exit exocraft" which is fun when picking stuff up while in the Minotaur.
- Starship is often found partially inside of buildings after teleporting
- Targeting keys are in a bad location in the keymap and there's no target nearest hostile button. All you really need is that and next target, previous isn't necessary because there's not that many bad guys at once.
- Base building is truly terrible. Can't place half stairs hardly at all, except outside a building. Once you use a workaround to get them placed, you can't put the wall back where you wanted it or what have you.
- Pop-in is atrocious. This is related to:
- While flying over a planet surface, items on the ground are not drawn until LONG after they would be visible. This is especially noticeable when playing at 4k on a sizable display, but it's always an issue.
- Volume of sound played when docking with freighters is excessive
- Music is not normalized
- Junk in the ceiling area of derelict freighters which the automated security orbs can hide in and SHOOT THROUGH. You can shoot through it too, but you can't see through it, so you get shot at by things you can't see.
- Can't pay off the paltry settlement debt from my half-billion-unit cash hoard
- Transporting to settlement doesn't bring you out in your office where the transporter is
- Can't pick settlement building locations
- Settlement status doesn't show when buildings need attention (it doesn't show their STATUS)
- Drone flies in your way while you're trying to scan
- Minotaur AI makes a point of getting and staying in your way when you mine on foot. (Move over in the direction it's going, then move back the other direction and shoot behind it. Or turn off the AI. Still annoying.)
