Today I managed a successful test drive of my pickup after reinstallation of the aft fuel tank, in which I have replaced the broken rubber pickup with a short piece of Gates multi-fuel compatible fuel line (3/8" ID.) This time I made it to town and back without mishap. It was actually fairly amazing how quickly the truck started up; I didn't do any air bleeding until after I got back.
Replacement of the aft fuel tank is a monster if it's not convenient to lift the bed off, and it often is not. It would best be done with the vehicle lifted; I did not lift my truck and I wouldn't have gotten my big head into the kick-up area (where the rear axle lives) without my pickup being lifted. Interestingly I noted from the factory service manual that all F-Series but Super Duty models have the same rear springs (at least by model number) and the same optional helper springs.
